Keynoting "Safe Space" conference in Whatcom County Schools
RSVP with Beverly Yuodelis at 206-554-9279 Fairhaven College Auditorium at Western Washington University Time: 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. Beverly's email is yuodelb@cc.wwu.edu
What is a "Safe Space?" It is when member of the school community (parents, teachers, counselors, and students), come together to work on spotting and stopping anti-LGBT (Lesiban, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender) bias in our commuity and learn how to be effective allies for students.
What is anti-LGBT bias? It is the result of fear or misunderstanding of the LGBT community in the school community. It can manifest itself through verbal or physical harassment and bullying of LGBT students.
Why be an ally? Anti-LGBT bias hurts us all. When LGBT students do not feel that they have allies to turn to for support, they may do poorly in school or skip class out of fear for their safety. A school environment that is not inclusive for LGBT students may also be uninclusive for other groups. To attain an inclusive environment that positively affirms the potential of all students, we must address anti-LGBT bias along with other forms of bias.
Please join us for two reasons:
- Anti-LGBT bias and discimination is real, and it needs to be addressed. It is your opportunity to learn what YOU can do to stop it.
- Beverly Yuodelis is a young ally, and an important one. For her to choose anti-LGBT bullying as her senior project is a bold step. Please give her your support in her endeavor! She is showing that she is a Stand UP Speak OUT Wind Changer by using her Power of One to access and impact the Power in All of US. We salute her determination, courage and boldness.
